Tension and Trauma Release

Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises

The VARA Blog

TRE stands for Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises, a somatic (body-based) practice developed by Dr. David Berceli. It’s designed to help the body release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma through a series of simple exercises that safely activate a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating. These neurogenic tremors help the body discharge built-up stress, providing a physical release for tension that may have accumulated over time. By activating this natural shaking mechanism, the exercises help calm the nervous system, encouraging a shift from a heightened state of alertness or anxiety. As a result, the body is gently guided out of survival mode (commonly known as the fight-or-flight response) and into a state of greater relaxation and balance.

Tension and Trauma Release

From Beta (Overwhelm) to Alpha/Theta (Calm & Healing)

Your brain operates at different wave frequencies, depending on your state of consciousness:

Beta Waves (14–30 Hz)

  • Associated with active thinking, problem-solving, stress, and anxiety
  • Overwhelm and “fight/flight” responses happen in high Beta

Alpha Waves (8–13 Hz)

  • Calm, restful, meditative state
  • Often associated with light relaxation and presence

Theta Waves (4–7 Hz)

  • Deep relaxation, dreaming, intuitive states
  • Seen in deep meditation, healing, and REM sleep

When you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, your brain is operating in what’s known as the Beta wave state. This is a high-frequency brainwave associated with alertness, problem-solving, and often fight-or-flight responses. In this state, your body is on high alert: your muscles are tense, your heart rate increases, and stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol are released. This is useful in emergencies but harmful if it becomes chronic.

TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) uses specific movements to gently fatigue certain muscle groups, which then trigger a natural reflex in your body called neurogenic tremoring: a type of shaking that animals also use to release stress after a threat. These tremors are not forced: they emerge naturally and safely once your body feels supported. As these tremors occur, the body starts to release deep, stored tension and stress, which signals to your nervous system that it is safe. This allows the brain to begin shifting from high-alert Beta waves into slower, more relaxed states like Alpha and Theta brainwaves.

  • Alpha waves are linked to calm, meditative states where the mind is clear and present.
  • Theta waves are deeper, often connected to emotional healing, intuition, and the kind of restfulness you feel during meditation or REM sleep.

This shift not only soothes the nervous system but also promotes emotional release, physical relaxation, and long-term resilience. Over time, practicing TRE can help you retrain your body and brain to return more easily to a state of calm, even when life becomes stressful.

TRE Helps Shift You

Fight/Flight Mode (High Beta)
When you’re overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious, your body is in sympathetic nervous system dominance—adrenaline, cortisol, tight muscles, shallow breath.

TRE Exercises Trigger Neurogenic Tremors
This is a natural shaking mechanism your body uses to release tension (similar to how animals shake off stress after being chased). You’re not “doing” it—it’s a reflex once your body feels safe.

Body Discharges Tension
As you tremor, your body releases stored physical and emotional tension without needing to relive or rehash traumatic memories.

Nervous System Regulates
Your parasympathetic nervous system (rest/digest) activates. Your brain waves shift into Alpha and Theta, creating a deep sense of calm, safety, and emotional reset.

These techniques, like TRE, help move your body out of survival mode and into a regenerative state, where true healing and resilience can build. TRE uses natural body tremors to help release deep muscular tension and trauma, shifting your brain and nervous system from a high-stress Beta wave state (fight/flight) to a calmer Alpha/Theta wave state (rest/restore), allowing your body to heal, reset, and regain emotional balance.
