If you’ve ever dreamed of spending your days volunteering with horses, surrounded by nature and fresh sea air, the Pearly Beach Horse Trails program offers the perfect opportunity. Located near Pearly Beach on the Cape Whale Coast of South Africa, this experience combines horse care, trail riding and coastal scenery in one memorable stay. Volunteers join a small team working on a horse farm and trail operation, helping with feeding, grooming, tack maintenance and preparing for guided rides across dune forest, fynbos and long white beaches.

Program Accommodation
Two well-appointed, self-catering cottages are available on the farm. These provide easy access to Pearly Beach Village, nearby Gansbaai, restaurants and shops, Kleinbaai for shark cage diving and boat cruises, and the unspoilt beaches of Pearly Beach. The farm is central for exploring many attractions, including lighthouses, L’Agulhas (the southernmost tip of Africa), prehistoric sandstone caves, hikes and mountain bike trails, quad biking and horse trails, all set in unrivalled scenery.
Relax in the calm environment of horse farm life, surrounded by fynbos-covered hills and the pristine white sandy coastline of Pearly Beach. The area is a premium whale-watching spot from July through November, when Southern Right Whales come to breed, birth and nurture their calves.
On site, resident astronomer Kos Coronaios can lead a Night Sky Safari from a fully equipped observatory, revealing the wonders of the southern hemisphere sky, including the Milky Way. This closely guarded gem of the Cape Whale Coast awaits your exploration.

Daily Life on the Farm
Each day begins with practical work on the ranch: checking the horses, grooming, cleaning hooves, saddling up and preparing for guided tours. After the morning tasks, you’ll assist with meeting guests, briefing riders, leading horses when needed, or riding yourself if you are confident enough.
The guided trails take you through indigenous fynbos, along forested dunes and onto a pristine beach. A highlight for many is a swim with the horses in the ocean, depending on the weather and tide.

Volunteering Activities and Free Time
Afternoons include lighter duties such as cleaning equipment, clearing paddocks, maintaining trails and keeping the beach area tidy. You’ll also have free time to explore the surrounding area. Go hiking, cycling, enjoy the beach, watch for whales in season or simply relax at the farm.
For every three-week placement, two excursions are included. These may feature a visit to the southernmost tip of Africa, scenic cave walks or a trip through nearby indigenous forests.
