Explore the Huguenot Monument

The Huguenot Memorial Museum is a history museum in Franschhoek, in the Cape Winelands of the Western Cape. It tells the story of the French Huguenots who fled religious persecution in Europe and settled at the Cape of Good Hope from 1688 onwards. Exhibits include period furniture, Bibles, silverware, portraits and original documents.

The museum is housed in the reconstructed Saasveld Building, an 18th-century manor, and includes additional displays focused on local history. The broader site also incorporates the Huguenot Memorial Monument, landscaped gardens, a sculpture garden and the South African Perfume Museum, offering visitors a mix of history, culture and outdoor spaces.

The building is wheelchair-accessible, with ramps, lifts and an accessible toilet. Entry is pay-to-enter, with reduced rates for children and students. The one experience not to miss is the main historical exhibition explaining the Huguenot story, which is often paired with a walk through the memorial gardens, a visit to the monument, and time spent exploring Franschhoek’s wine farms or local restaurants afterward.
