Hout Bay is a coastal suburb on the Atlantic side of Cape Town, about twenty minutes from the city centre. It is known for its working harbour, long beach, and views of surrounding mountains.
Visitors can walk the shoreline, take a boat trip to Seal Island, browse the Bay Harbour Market on weekends, explore the harbour’s informal craft stalls, or hike nearby routes such as Chapman’s Peak trails. Hout Bay is known as a wellness hub, offering retreats, spa treatments, yoga sessions, beach walks, and nature-based activities that make use of the calm setting and surrounding mountains.
Hout Bay has many dining options, ranging from casual fish-and-chips to sit-down restaurants. The area is child-friendly and there are public bathrooms at the harbour and beach. Most spaces are accessible, though some older areas may have uneven surfaces. Access to the beach and harbour is free, and there is safe parking in designated areas. A boat trip to see the Cape fur seals is the one experience not to miss. Hout Bay is often paired with Chapman’s Peak Drive, Camps Bay, and Cape Point.
