The Cederberg Wilderness Area is a wild and stunning mountain region about three hours north of Cape Town, where rugged sandstone cliffs, winding valleys, and ancient San rock art create a playground for outdoor lovers.
Adventurers can hike the Maltese Cross Trail, Wolfberg Cracks, Stadsaal Cave Loop, Wolfberg Arch, and Wupperthal to Algeria Trail, or pedal the Kromrivier Mountain Bike Trail for a full taste of the mountains, rivers, and sandstone landscapes. The best time to visit is from autumn to spring, when cooler weather, clear skies, and blooming wildflowers or flowing rivers make the scenery even more spectacular.
The wilderness area has no full-service restaurants, but nearby lodges and farm stops offer meals. It is child-friendly on shorter trails, bathrooms are available at main trailheads, and terrain is rugged so wheelchair access is limited. Most trails are free to enter, with safe parking at designated starting points.
A must-experience highlight is the ancient San rock art, often paired with visits to Bushmans Kloof, Algeria Forest Station, or Clanwilliam Dam for a complete Cederberg adventure.
