The Zuurberg Mountain Pass drive is a self-guided activity that lets you explore one of South Africa’s most scenic mountain routes at your own pace. If you are travelling in a guided group, your guide will lead you along the route.
The drive typically takes around two to three hours, depending on stops along the way, and is suitable for families with children, though it is not accessible for wheelchair users due to the rugged terrain.
The Zuurberg Mountain Pass is located in the Eastern Cape, near the Addo region, connecting the small towns at the edge of the Zuurberg Mountains. The road is mostly gravel and winding, so driving speeds are moderate, generally around 30–50 km/h, allowing plenty of time to take in the scenery.
Along the way, you can expect to spot a variety of wildlife, including antelope, ostriches, and numerous bird species, as well as unique fynbos vegetation and rocky outcrops. The terrain offers dramatic viewpoints, perfect for photography, and there are several spots where you can safely stop, stretch your legs, and enjoy the natural beauty of this historic mountain pass.
